How to Get an Australian Working Holiday Visa (WHV) – Step-by-Step Guide

Are you dreaming of traveling and working in Australia? The Working Holiday Visa (WHV) – Subclass 417 is your gateway to an unforgettable adventure. This visa allows young travelers from eligible countries to stay in Australia for up to 12 months, with the option to work and explore. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide on how to apply successfully.

1. Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet the following requirements:

  • Age: You must be 18 to 35 years old (for French citizens and some other nationalities; for others, the limit is 30 years old).
  • Passport: You need a valid passport from an eligible country.
  • Funds: You must have at least 5,000 AUD (about €3,000) in savings.
  • Health & Character: You must meet health and character requirements, which may include a medical check or police certificate.
  • No dependents: You cannot bring dependent children.
  • First-time or repeat applicant? You can apply for the first, second, or third WHV, but conditions apply.

📝 2. Apply Online for the WHV

The application process is fully online through the Australian Government website:

  1. Create an ImmiAccount on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au
  2. Complete the application form for Subclass 417
  3. Upload required documents, including:
    • A copy of your passport (ID page)
    • A bank statement showing proof of funds
    • A passport-size photo
  4. Pay the visa fee (640 AUD, approximately €400)

3. Wait for Approval

  • Processing time: Usually a few days to several weeks.
  • You may be asked to provide additional documents, such as medical tests or flight tickets.
  • Once approved, your visa will be electronically linked to your passport.

✈️ 4. Travel to Australia & Start Your Adventure

  • You have 12 months to enter Australia from the date your visa is granted.
  • Once you arrive, your WHV is valid for 12 months.
  • You can work for up to 6 months per employer.
  • Travel freely across the country and make the most of your experience!

🔄 5. Extend Your WHV (2nd & 3rd Year)Want to stay longer?

You can apply for a 2nd or 3rd WHV if you complete:

  • 88 days of specific work (farm work, construction, etc.) for the 2nd WHV.
  • 179 days of specific work for the 3rd WHV.
